The iconic GiGO Akihabara Building 1, a landmark synonymous with the Akihabara gaming scene, is shutting its doors after a 33-year run.

According to reports from various Japanese media outlets on the 15th, one of Akihabara’s primary gaming centers, GiGO Akihabara Building 1, will cease operations on August 31. The reason given is the expiration of the building's lease agreement.

Located in Akihabara, Tokyo, GiGO Akihabara Building 1 first opened its doors in 1992 under the name 'Hi-Tech Land Sega Shintoku.' The venue has seen several identity shifts over the decades, operating as 'Club Sega Akihabara' and 'Sega Akihabara Building 1.' Following Genda GiGO Entertainment's acquisition of Sega’s entire arcade and entertainment division in 2022, the venue continued to operate under the name 'GiGO Akihabara Building 1.'

While Building 1 is closing, the other Akihabara venues—Buildings 2, 3, and 5—will remain open for business. As for the space vacated by Building 1, the Japanese firm Matahari Entertainment is set to open a new amusement facility in its place.
