Valve Corporation founder Gabe Newell recently opened up about his daily routine, his takes on AI technology, and his startup philosophy in an interview with business YouTuber Zalkar Saliev.

Newell spent the pandemic in New Zealand, but since 2021, he has returned to Seattle—home base for Valve—where he enjoys a rather swanky life aboard a luxury yacht. Describing his current routine, Newell noted a cycle of 'waking up, working, scuba diving, and working again,' insisting that he works seven days a week. Newell claims this seven-day grind is so 'fun that there isn't enough time to sleep,' adding that 'if retirement means quitting terrible work to do only what is fun and interesting, then in that sense, retirement happened a long time ago.'

In reality, beyond Valve and Steam, Newell is deeply involved in various fields, including the neural interface firm Starfish Neuroscience, AI-related projects, and the development of aerosol pathogen detection devices. While he calls it 'retirement,' his schedule remains packed with active, hands-on projects. In follow-up clips, Newell expanded on AI in game development, startup funding, and customer relations.

When asked by the interviewer whether it is more important to master current development tools or learn how to use AI, Newell argued that both are essential. The deeper one's understanding of the fundamental principles of current tools, the more effectively one can wield AI technology.

Newell stated, 'Even someone without programming skills could, by supplementing their abilities with AI, become a developer more valuable than a seasoned professional with ten years of experience.' However, he added that 'understanding the fundamental mindset and techniques of those building machine learning systems will only sharpen one's tool-wielding capabilities,' emphasizing that learning traditional tools and AI tools are mutually reinforcing.

On the topic of modern startup culture, Newell suggested that founders should stop obsessing over Venture Capital (VC) funding and focus on creating value for people. If you do that, the money follows naturally—often at a lower cost than dealing with VCs. Newell stressed that 'taking a mountain of cash upfront and hiring a massive workforce just to make your pitch-deck lies come true is a foolish strategy that wastes an enormous amount of money and human time.'

Ultimately, Newell concluded by saying, 'The important thing is to ignore all the trivial distractions and focus on how to make your customers happier.' The focus should always be on customers, partners, and employees; everything else will eventually fall into place.
