The second week of August delivered a surprising number of noteworthy releases. Beyond the hype for 'Mafia: The Old Country', we saw quirky titles like 'Tiny Bookshop', 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2', and 'Is This Seat Taken'. However, one particular pixel-art RPG really caught my eye: 'Artis Impact'.

Artis Impact is a post-apocalyptic title built using RPG Maker. What hits you first is the striking pixel art; it carries a hand-drawn, gritty sketch aesthetic that sets a surprisingly sombre tone for a world on the brink of collapse.

Yet, that gravity evaporates within five minutes. The protagonist is Akane, an agent dressed in mourning-black with long white hair. While Akane possesses fearsome combat prowess, she is, frankly, a bit of a ditz in daily life. Upon being ordered to infiltrate the Meiji hot springs, she immediately gets distracted by local mochi delicacies, or ends up getting evicted for non-payment, forcing her to sleep in a cave where a polar bear encounter ensues.

Whenever Akane faces an absurd situation, the beautiful character portrait contorts into hilarious 'face-fault' expressions, leaning heavily into the exaggerated tropes of Japanese manga. The dynamic between the altruistic, clumsy Akane and the hyper-rational, cold-calculating assistant robot 'Bot' creates a comedic rhythm that really sticks.

The gameplay loop feels like a classic 'Dragon Quest' title injected with a life-simulation serum. Akane travels across the world to complete missions; once outside the city, the map and characters shift into cute, stylized icons. Humanity’s tech-dependent civilization has crumbled, and malevolent AI units are closing in on the survivors. Akane belongs to 'Lit', a resistance group refusing to give up.

Between missions, there is plenty of room for side activities. Akane can earn extra cash through part-time jobs, manage bank interest, or dabble in real estate. Visiting the gym to hit the punching bag also offers a slight stat boost. While optional, these mundane tasks often hide secret interactions and clever side quests, some featuring surprisingly creative puzzles.

Combat is a turn-based JRPG affair. Unlike the dynamic flow seen in recent titles like 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33', it is a straightforward exchange of skills and strikes. Enemies do not respawn, and combat is relatively sparse outside of boss encounters. During those boss fights, however, the pixel art shines with cinematic flair, allowing Akane to look genuinely cool for a change.

As of the 11th, Artis Impact holds a 'Mostly Positive' (79% positive) rating on Steam. Fans are calling it a "breathtakingly beautiful piece of pixel art" and "a quality title that defies the limitations of RPG Maker," noting that the best content is tucked away in the game's hidden corners. Critics, however, point out that the main story is quite short and that the game can be cryptic, with a combat system that some may find a bit too repetitive.
