Epic Games has challenged the overseas trademark application by EPID Games, but clarified that it will not pursue legal action.

Epic Games held a media roundtable at Unreal Fest Seoul 2025 at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 25th. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, and Park Sung-chul, CEO of Epic Games Korea, were in attendance and addressed the recent trademark issue.

Sweeney stated, “There has been no lawsuit against EPID Games, and we have no intention of filing one in the future,” adding, “However, within the same gaming industry, ‘epid’ and ‘epic’ are deemed too similar, which we felt could confuse users, hence the objection.”

The dispute arose during the process of EPID Games filing for ‘Trickcal Revive’ trademarks in key countries for its international expansion. Epic Games raised objections based on: ▲ the similarity between the applied trademark ‘EPIDGames’ and its own registered trademark ‘EPIC GAMES’ in terms of designated goods and markers; ▲ the similar visual appearance except for the fourth letter; and ▲ the weak pronunciation of the third syllable ‘d’, making the labels phonetically similar.

Sweeney noted, “In English, ‘Epic’ and ‘Epid’ might look similar, but in Korean, ‘에픽’ and ‘에피드’ are clearly distinct,” and explained, “Since this was acknowledged in Korea, we accepted it without further legal measures.”

Although the objection was filed domestically on February 11, the ‘EPIDGames’ trademark was officially approved on August 4. According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office’s (KIPRIS) search service, Epic Games did not pursue any additional procedures. Consequently, it is observed that the likelihood of legal action abroad is low, should the trademark be registered without successful objections elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Sweeney stated, “We may raise objections in other countries if similar cases arise,” adding, “A company name should be unique and represent its services, so it is standard procedure to respond if there is potential for confusion.”
