As the Indian gaming market experiences rapid growth, titles drawing from local culture, such as 'Raji: An Ancient Epic' or 'Unleash the Avatar,' are emerging one after another. A new title following this trend has been unveiled.

The new developer Odd Compass Studio opened a Steam page on the 6th for their upcoming game, 'Rakshasa,' a first-person RPG set in modern India. 'Rakshasa' is a term for demons or malevolent spirits in Hindu mythology. Numerous Rakshasas appear in Hindu scriptures, and the term was later adopted into Buddhism as 'Natsal.' The developer stated that the game aims for an indie dark fantasy genre and was inspired by titles such as 'Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines,' 'Fallout: New Vegas,' and 'Baldur's Gate.'

The game is set in a fictional Indian city called 'Rakshakonda.' It is a space where luxurious apartment complexes, decaying slums, ancient temples, and markets coexist. Players can spot iconic Indian transportation like auto-rickshaws, roadside stalls selling chai and paan, and bas-reliefs reminiscent of the Khajuraho Hindu temples. The protagonist awakens the latent power of Tantra during an illegal excavation at a heritage site. Afterward, the player is caught up in a secret war in a world where corrupt ascetics, Asuras, and ancient monsters coexist with ordinary citizens, and must face a massive conspiracy threatening the world.

Combat is turn-based and emphasizes tactical elements. Players must break enemy defenses by utilizing Tantric Mudras, rituals, and talismans. In particular, the 'Wheel of Dharma' system is introduced, allowing players to land critical hits by timing their spell attacks or engage in strategic gambling. Enemies are implemented as beings from Hindu mythology, such as Rakshasas, Vetalas, and Yakshinis.

Non-combat role-playing elements are also significant. Players can navigate situations using various skills such as insight, persuasion, stealth, occult, or religious knowledge, and every choice affects their fate. Visually, the game creates a unique atmosphere by adding the texture of early 2000s digital cameras to the art style of classic RPGs. It is characterized by a dense depiction of India where the modern world and mythology collide.

'Rakshasa' is scheduled for release on Steam, and specific launch dates or additional platforms have not yet been disclosed.
