Nexon Games has finally pulled back the curtain on its upcoming PC and console single-player action-adventure title, 'Woochi: The Wayfarer', through a freshly minted developer interview video.

The video features Director Kang Dong-yeon and Art Director Mok Young-mi. Woochi: The Wayfarer charts the journey of the legendary Taoist master Jeon Woo-chi, set against the backdrop of an alternate Joseon dynasty. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game promises a rich Joseon fantasy world, weaving an original narrative inspired by the classic Korean novel 'Jeon Woo-chi-jeon'. Players can expect a repertoire of traditional Korean monsters and fluid combat mechanics mastered by the protagonist, Woochi.

The team is aiming for a distinct 'Joseon fantasy' that balances historical research with creative flair. The development team has been meticulously studying historical records regarding lifestyles, architecture, clothing, and cuisine, even going as far as conducting field trips to capture the authentic landscapes and geography of the period.

Art Director Mok describes the project as a fusion period piece where folklore figures like Taoist masters, Dokkaebi, and Nine-tailed foxes roam. Director Kang adds, 'Jeon Woo-chi is a household name for any Korean gamer, but our version focuses on the protagonist's growth as a trainee Taoist. The trials encountered during this training form the very foundation of the gameplay experience.'

The protagonist is a unique iteration crafted by the team. Art Director Mok explains, 'Because the legend of Jeon Woo-chi has so many variations, we have plenty of room for interpretation. We are crafting a version that feels distinct from films or television dramas while retaining the character's charm. We’re blending iconic elements like the traditional Gat, Hanbok, and rain capes with fantasy motifs to create our own unique take on Woochi.'

This is a single-player experience laser-focused on the narrative and combat of a trainee Taoist. Director Kang notes, 'We are pouring our hearts into delivering a narrative with a poignant, lasting impact at the finale, with a heavy emphasis on cinematic presentation. Our goal is to create a game that provides a truly exhilarating combat experience through a variety of visually stunning sequences.'

While the initial teaser leaned into darker aesthetics, the actual game leans towards a much brighter, more vibrant atmosphere. Art Director Mok clarifies, 'Every frame in that teaser was rendered using in-game assets. We wanted to convey the true quality and mood of the game. By utilizing 3D scanning and MetaHuman-based facial animation, we are striving for a level of character immersion that feels truly authentic.'

And yes, that magpie sporting a Gat? It's making an appearance. Director Kang admits, 'The whole team was quite startled when we saw K-Pop Demon Hunters, but rest assured, our game features a much more realistic magpie and a fearsome tiger. You will also encounter the shaman character 'Myoin' seen in the video.' Art Director Mok adds, 'That particular magpie made its own Gat out of twigs because it desperately wants to become a scholar.'
