Danganronpa's Kodaka: "The development of The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- started from anger"

AI Summary
Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka’s latest, The Hundred Line, is finally arriving in Korean. The project was built on pure defiance and debt, resulting in a massive 100-ending narrative. Developers are now looking to engage the passionate Korean market to see if this unique SRPG experiment hits the mark.

Since its debut in 2010, Spike Chunsoft’s Danganronpa has remained a titan of the mystery adventure genre. Its quirky, magnetic cast and narrative twists left an indelible mark on players, ensuring that anything bearing the mark of its creators commands immediate attention.

While not every project from that lineage has fared well, The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- (hereinafter The Hundred Line), released by Too Kyo Games last April, is currently sailing smoothly with a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam eight months post-launch. It helps, of course, that Kazutaka Kodaka—the lead writer of Danganronpa—is at the helm as director, earning accolades for the game's gripping narrative.

Interest in Korea is bubbling over following the announcement of official Korean language support this past November. We sat down with key developers, including Director Kodaka and Aniplex Producer Shuntaro Ino, in a media interview on the 5th to peel back the curtain on the game's development and their feelings on the localization.

Q. Some time has passed since launch. What led to the decision for Korean localization at this stage?

Producer Ino: Korean was always on the table for international support. However, with a staggering 6 million Japanese characters to translate, finding a partner capable of handling such an immense text volume proved difficult. It’s a shame we couldn’t launch with it, but thanks to the game's strong reception, Arc System Works Asia stepped in with a publishing proposal. We’re thrilled by their enthusiasm—from booth operations to events—and relieved to finally bring the game to the Korean market.
Q. How do you perceive the Korean market and its gamers? What is your strategy moving forward?

Director Kodaka: In the past, there was a rigid view that Korea was 'all about online games.' But seeing the passion from Korean users for titles like the Danganronpa series—even without official localization—convinced me that the demand for console gaming is real. I want to use The Hundred Line as a proper gateway to connect with these players.
Q. What was the inspiration and initial planning behind The Hundred Line?

Director Kodaka: When I founded Too Kyo Games, I had two goals: create our own IP and collaborate with Kotaro Uchikoshi. After a project with a previous publisher fell through, I decided to finish it ourselves, even if it meant dipping into my own pockets. Essentially, the inspiration was a mix of defiance, pure rage, and a deep love for the craft. We basically bet our lives on this, and with Aniplex’s help, we crossed the finish line—though, sadly, I racked up quite a bit of debt in the process (laughs).

Q. You’ve leaned heavily into specific numbers: 100 days, 100 endings, and 15 students. Was there a particular intent?

Director Kodaka: In a crowded market, you need a competitive edge. Since we have so many writers, I thought, 'Why not overwhelm them with sheer volume?' The developers looked absolutely hopeless when I first pitched the '100 days, 100 endings' goal (laughs), but it allowed us to create a branching narrative where the genre itself changes based on your choices. You don't have to see them all, of course—stopping when you feel satisfied is a perfectly valid way to play.
Q. Any struggles while writing such a massive scenario?

Director Kodaka: The sheer workload was endless. We have a policy where the writers handle the directing scripts themselves to ensure the music, expressions, and pacing match their original vision. Between the writing, the scripting, and the depth of the SRPG sections, our costs and development time—and my debt—just kept climbing. But like I said, that 'defiant rage' kept us going until the end.
Q. You keep mentioning the debt. Is the company in any real trouble?

Director Kodaka: Luckily, it’s at a manageable level now. I can finally move past cup noodles and start adding a bit of salad to my diet (laughs). Please, buy the game with confidence.

Q. Many feel the 'despair' theme and atmosphere are quite similar to the Danganronpa series.

Director Kodaka: This project was intended as a 'best of' collection of everything we’ve done so far. I didn't consciously try to dodge the Danganronpa style, and since I genuinely enjoy that tone, the resemblance is natural. That said, the works are not directly connected.
Q. Eight months on, you’ve received plenty of feedback. What stands out and what would you like to improve?

Director Kodaka: We added a high-difficulty mode due to user requests. On a personal note, I’m incredibly satisfied that we managed to create such a unique narrative experience and that the SRPG combat turned out far more engaging than I’d even anticipated.

Q. Any plans for DLC or platform expansions?

Producer Ino: No plans for DLC adding characters or story currently. We’re focused on increasing sales and handling issues outside the game itself. Regarding series expansion, I’d rather avoid building 'illegal extensions' on the game—I prefer broadening the IP through media mixes. As for platforms, we’re open to it, but it’s a business decision that requires careful calculation.
Q. A final word for the Korean players?

Director Kodaka: Many Korean players have been sticking with the Japanese version, but playing in your native language will help you grasp 100% of the narrative nuance. I’m honored to have the Korean localization and hope many of you enjoy it. Also, I’d love to become famous in Korea (laughs).
Producer Ino: Korea has an incredible passion for games relative to its population. Since this is our first time launching in Korean, I’m eager to see which characters and stories resonate with you. Aniplex is quite strong on the merchandise front, so if a partner emerges, I’d love to discuss expanding our business scope there.
