Dune, famous for its iconic sandworms, is a household name in Korea thanks to its classic novels and cinematic adaptations. Unsurprisingly, it has also birthed some impressive board game adaptations, most notably the Dune: Imperium series, which has been making waves among tabletop enthusiasts.
We have all seen it before: a blockbuster movie gets a tie-in board game, and it’s essentially glorified merchandise. More often than not, you are just looking at a box with a movie poster slapped on it and character names printed on cards, with actual gameplay quality taking a backseat.
The Dune: Imperium series, however, is a different beast. The original title was named the Best Card Game of 2020 by Boardgamegeek, the world’s largest board game community, and earned nominations for numerous awards. It is a rare gem—a successful game that actually lives up to its massive intellectual property.
Why did the board game arrive before the film?
The origin story of Dune: Imperium traces back to 2018. During Gen Con, the massive US board game convention, Legendary Entertainment announced a Dune tabletop project. That very same day, they reached out to Dire Wolf, a boutique developer based in Denver, Colorado.
At the time, Dire Wolf had made a name for itself with the deck-builder Clank!, but tackling a giant IP like Dune was uncharted territory. The pressure was immense—this was the first Dune board game in 40 years. After a week of intense deliberation, designer Paul Dennen struck gold with a revolutionary concept: blending deck-building with worker placement, using cards to deploy your agents.
▲ Dune: Imperium - Uprising and the original Dune: Imperium base game (Image source: Gamemeca)
Curiously, the game hit the shelves before the movie. The original Dune: Imperium arrived in November 2020, while Denis Villeneuve’s first film premiered in 2021. The studio gave the dev team full creative freedom, not forcing them to adhere strictly to the film’s timeline. As a result, the game draws inspiration from the entire Frank Herbert novel series.
Then, in November 2023, just months before Dune: Part Two, the sequel 'Dune: Imperium - Uprising' was released. Weeks prior, Legendary invited the team to California for an early screening of the film. Dire Wolf CEO Scott Martins famously called it 'the best day of my life'.
This series is no mere piece of movie merchandise. It was conceived in parallel with the films and stands as a deep strategy game that explores the Dune universe as thoroughly as the movies themselves.
Timothée Chalamet is literally on your cards
Now, let’s talk gameplay. The artwork is striking, leaning into the film's aesthetic. You’ll find Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya staring back at you from the cards. If you have seen the movies, these visuals will instantly click. If there is a gripe, it is that the physical components, aside from the sandworms, are a bit understated.
▲ You can finally play as the characters from the silver screen (Image source: Gamemeca)
▲ The cards feature scenes and faces straight from the film, which really pulls you into the world (Image source: Gamemeca)
▲ Left: Paul from the original Dune: Imperium. Right: Paul from Uprising. If you have watched the film, you will know exactly why he has changed. These details are expertly woven into the game's systems (Image source: Gamemeca)
▲ The trademark sandworms. The game includes both wooden and miniature versions (Image source: Gamemeca)
Once you start, your impression changes. As mentioned, Dune: Imperium - Uprising marries deck-building with worker placement. You grow your power by purchasing cards, much like how Paul Atreides grows into a Fremen warrior in the film. You start with a basic deck and recruit more powerful assets as you progress.
▲ You start with 10 cards and grow your deck by purchasing more as the game unfolds (Image source: Gamemeca)
Worker placement is the other half of the coin. You place your agents to secure spice, recruit troops, or exert political influence. Since other players can block your spots, the tension over who gets to act where is palpable.
The core of the game is political maneuvering. The Fremen, Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, and the Emperor all play their parts. Gain enough favor, and you earn an alliance token. But don't get too comfortable—if someone else builds a deeper relationship, they can snatch that token right out from under you. It perfectly mirrors the backstabbing politics of Arrakis.
▲ The four areas on the left represent the factions: Fremen, Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, and the Emperor. Moving your wooden token up indicates your rising influence (Image source: Gamemeca)
Resource management is key. You must juggle spice, Solari (money), and water. Water is precious on Arrakis, while spice is abundant, and the reverse is true in the Empire. Mastering these economic shifts is at the heart of the strategy.
The combat is a thrill. Once actions are finished, victories are determined by troop counts and attack power from your cards. But hidden intrigue cards mean the outcome is never certain—much like the visions of Paul, the future remains hazy until the very last moment.
▲ Players clashing on the battlefield. The sandworm represents 3 attack power, while the square token is worth 2 (Image source: Gamemeca)
▲ Intrigue cards can flip the tide of battle in an instant (Image source: Gamemeca)
Uprising: Even more strategic depth than its predecessor
Dune: Imperium - Uprising significantly expands the strategic options. More worker spots are available, and you can now unlock special areas through faction influence. For instance, you need a level 2 influence with the Spacing Guild to utilize the transport functions at the CHOAM Corporation.
Spies have also been added, mirroring the intelligence warfare seen in Dune: Part Two. Spies allow you to infiltrate locations already occupied by other players, opening up a whole new layer of tactical choice.
▲ You place your agents to perform actions. The cylinder-shaped piece is the spy. Unlike the base game, spies in Uprising let you jump into spaces already taken by others (Image source: Gamemeca)
Resource balance has been tightened; water is harder to come by, making management more critical. Combat has also been emphasized, mirroring the grand scale of the film's climax. The arrival of the sandworms adds a chaotic, dramatic variable to every battle.
Interestingly, Uprising is a standalone title, but it is modular. It is complete on its own, but you can mix in expansions from the base game. It is a pricey endeavor if you buy everything at once, but the core box is more than enough to keep you occupied for a long time.
The solo mode is also fantastic. Thanks to a well-oiled 'Automa' system, playing alone feels like a real challenge. Some even use the Automa in 2-player games to ramp up the tension.
Iconic movie moments brought to life
We played a 3-player session: one novice who had never touched the game, one veteran of the base game, and one seasoned Uprising player.
▲ The 3-player setup. It only comes with wooden bits, which some might find a bit plain—hence the aftermarket for custom miniatures (Image source: Gamemeca)
Chaos ensued immediately. The newcomer destroyed a hill that was blocking a base, and sandworms began appearing in almost every battle. Without special tactics, standard military power just wouldn't cut it. Just like those who were not Fremen, we felt powerless before the might of the sandworms.
▲ The great war, triggered by the arrival of the sandworms (Image source: Gamemeca)
▲ Once one player summoned a sandworm, the rest of us were forced to follow suit (Image source: Gamemeca)
The final battle was the highlight. The victory condition was rising in influence, but a player summoned a sandworm, doubled their influence, and snatched the win. It was a perfect recreation of Paul riding into battle to flip the tables on his enemies. (Sadly, it wasn't me.)
▲ The decisive late-game conflict card. Winning with a sandworm granted double rewards (Image source: Gamemeca)
The veteran player immediately noticed the changes in Uprising—water was scarcer, and combat victories felt more impactful. The spy system reduced the frustration of being blocked, but added a new layer of 'when to use it' anxiety.
While the original is a fine entry point, strategies can become predictable over time. Uprising, however, offers enough variety to keep the replayability high. Each session invites new strategies and different character choices, ensuring no two games feel identical.
That said, it might feel daunting for a total beginner. Between deck-building, worker placement, politics, and combat, there is a lot to juggle. A 2-3 hour playtime is also a commitment, and you will definitely need someone at the table who has mastered the rules.
A top pick for fans wanting to dive deeper into the world of Dune
If you enjoyed the movies, I highly recommend this. You get to experience the political intrigue and factional conflicts that the films just couldn't squeeze into their runtime.
▲ It is a steep learning curve, but once you clear that hurdle, controlling the factions of Dune is an immensely rewarding experience (Image source: Gamemeca)
It is perfect for fans looking to immerse themselves in the lore. Through play, you will naturally come to understand the political structures and the distinct motivations of each faction.
It is also a great fit for strategy gamers who want something substantial but not soul-crushingly complex. Once you get the hang of it, it is a game you will be coming back to again and again.
Even better, Dire Wolf has released a digital version of the base game on Steam and mobile. It is a fantastic way to learn the rules without the stress of managing physical bits.
▲ You can pick up the base game on Steam. It is a remarkably faithful digital port (Image source: Gamemeca)
Dune: Imperium - Uprising sets a new benchmark for IP-based board games. It is not just merchandise; it is a brilliant strategy game in its own right and a rare masterpiece that captures the essence of the Dune universe. If you love strategy or the world of Dune, do yourself a favour and play it.
