Valve has released detailed external design specifications for the Steam Controller and its charging dock.

On the 6th, Valve released CAD files containing detailed information on the outer shells of the Steam Controller and its 'puck' (charging dock). Valve stated that these files were provided for those who wish to "modify or mod the Steam Controller and puck, or design accessories (using 3D printers, etc.)."

The Steam Controller is a multi-functional input device developed by Valve. It features versatile control schemes and deep customization, designed for use across various platforms including PC and Steam Deck. While the original version released in 2015 did not receive a strong response, the 2026 iteration became a major topic of conversation, selling out globally within an hour of its May 5th launch and briefly crashing Steam servers.

The design files include precise dimensions and critical warnings for the Steam Controller components. For example, metal objects should not be placed near the top antenna area, and the LED status lights must not be obstructed. The documentation also provides detailed information regarding the magnetic charging contacts.

This is not the first time Valve has released external design information for its hardware. The company previously shared schematics for the original 2015 Steam Controller, the 2019 Valve Index VR headset, and the 2022 Steam Deck.

Meanwhile, Valve has included license terms with the design files. According to these terms, users are free to use and modify the materials for purposes such as 3D printing, but must contact Valve separately for any commercial use. It is also noted that opening the Steam Controller's external casing will void the warranty.
