Blue Protocol, once hailed as a promising Bandai Namco title, generated quite a buzz with its planned domestic release. However, following its lukewarm reception in Japan and subsequent server closure, it never actually made it to local shores. But don't write its obituary just yet. Tencent Games has partnered with Bandai Namco to introduce a new MMORPG, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance (hereinafter 'Star Resonance').

Star Resonance is an MMORPG built upon the 'Project Sky Blue' universe—the very foundation of the original Blue Protocol. It doubles down on that distinct Japanese anime-inspired aesthetic. With a fresh development team reinterpreting the original IP, the game now supports a multi-platform environment across PC and smartphones to boost accessibility. Beyond the combat mechanics—which include various classes and dungeons—the game offers life-skill content like gathering, fishing, and crafting, not to mention guild systems for social interaction.

Having already launched globally, Star Resonance hits the domestic market on the 18th. Developed by Tencent Games' subsidiary Bokura and published locally by X.D. Global, the big question remains: can this title breathe new life into the Blue Protocol legacy? With the launch imminent, we’ve taken a deep dive into what exactly is on offer.

The main stage of Star Resonance is the planet Regnas. Once a place of prosperity for the Bapharia race, it remains littered with ancient relics long after they ascended to the heavens.

Across the planet flows a pale blue energy known as 'Engram,' which serves as the lifeblood for human civilization and the activity of all living beings. Humanity continues to thrive by studying and applying the Bapharia relics found scattered across the landscape.

However, a threat known as the 'Corruption of Nothingness' has emerged. This phenomenon occurs when Engram is tainted by a twisted force, causing affected creatures to lose their sanity and become hyper-aggressive.

You start your journey as an adventurer in Asteliz, a trading city located at the southern tip of the Asteria Plains. As a major hub on the Magna Continent, it draws resources and talent from across the globe. Here, you’ll join the 'Pioneer Bureau,' a neutral organization tasked with exploring ancient ruins and fostering civilization. From beaches for fishing to lawless underground streets untouched by the local garrison, there’s no shortage of places to explore.

The scope of your adventure extends well beyond the city limits. You'll encounter colossal ancient towers reaching for the skies, their true purpose shrouded in mystery. Beyond the atmosphere, floating islands drift like fragments of a dream. Furthermore, regions like the agriculturally active Minster Horn, the nature-bound Kanamia tribe village, and the Andra Landing battleground—scarred by history—each offer unique environments and backstories.

The fields are crawling with monsters like Woolpo, Nappo, and Goblins. Be wary, as stronger variants like the Red Goblin, Thunder Ogre, and Fierce Golden Tooth pose a significant threat. Hunting these foes can yield rare rewards—defeat a differently-colored Woolpo for a chance at a mount, or take down a golden or silver Nappo to snag rare headgear.

Dungeons are where the real challenges lie. Whether you're facing a dragon corrupted by otherworldly power in 'Dragon's Claw,' diving into Tina's psyche to uncover the truth, navigating the gimmicks of the 'Ancient Tower,' or clearing the 'Goblin Den,' you'll need to cooperate with allies to secure your loot.

Along the way, you'll meet a cast of characters: the legendary adventurer Irona; the cheerful but war-scarred Tina; the stoic commander of the Asteliz garrison, Olvera; and Rorora, a shrine maiden of the Kanamia tribe. You might even spot the mysterious 'Ee' creatures inhabiting the planet.

Star Resonance features a class system that lets you swap weapons on the fly to suit your combat style. At launch, there are 8 classes to choose from, allowing you to adapt to any party composition or combat scenario. Each class fills a distinct role, whether it be melee, ranged, offense, or support.

The melee classes lead the charge. To be blunt, these are your damage dealers and tanks. Specifically, we have the agile 'Wind Knight' wielding a long spear, the high-burst 'Storm Blade' using swords and scythes, the protective 'Shield Knight' with sword and board, and the 'Heavy Guardian' who uses massive weapons to soak up incoming fire.

Ranged classes handle support and distance damage. This category includes the 'Beat Performer' who buffs allies with music, the 'Divine Archer' who summons wolves or hawks, the 'Sylvan Oracle' who balances healing and nature magic, and the 'Frost Mage' who keeps enemies locked down with ice.

Each of the 8 classes branches into two distinct styles. For example, the Storm Blade can specialize in 'Iai'—mastering the art of drawing the sword—or the 'Moonlight Scythe' style, which summons a scythe. Even within the same class, the combat experience varies significantly.

To assist in combat, you have 'Battle Imagines.' These summons can fight alongside you or even transform your character. Options include the 'Infected Spider Crab' for invincibility, the 'Corrupted Ogre' for energy blasts, the 'Fierce Golden Tooth' for party-wide shields, and the 'Furious Boar' for crowd control.

Life isn't just about fighting. You can traverse the world on 'Mount Imagines,' gather plants for crafting, or mine gems to upgrade your gear. You can fish at the Asteliz beach and even use special emotes to show off your catch.

Character customization is extensive, covering everything from body shape and hairstyle to granular facial features like nose and eye shape. Plus, you can dress up in various outfits to show off your style.

Community features are robust, with a guild system and interactive toys like soap bubbles, jump pads, and fireworks. You can even dance with others in the square.

The Photo Mode is a highlight, offering Normal, Real, Selfie, and Combat modes. With granular controls for gaze, filters, and stickers, you can capture your adventures like a professional photographer.
