Nintendo has officially opened pre-orders for the 'Virtual Boy', a 3D gaming device it teased back in September. The Virtual Boy is a gaming device featuring a head-mounted display; while its concept was innovative, it is remembered as an ill-fated device that failed because it was ahead of its time.

Pre-orders are available via the official Nintendo Korea store. There are two versions on offer: a replica model that faithfully recreates the details of the 1995 original, and a budget-friendly paper model. The replica model is priced at 99,800 KRW, and the paper model is 34,800 KRW. Both models serve as peripherals for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, allowing users to insert the console into the Virtual Boy device for use.

The official domestic release date is February 17, and items will be shipped to pre-order customers on February 16. Pre-orders are exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

When it first launched in 1995, the Virtual Boy garnered attention as Nintendo's first 3D gaming device, but it failed to achieve mass-market success due to its high price and complex design. It is known to have sold only about 770,000 units globally and was discontinued in 1996, the year after its release. Although it was a commercial failure, it is a product worth purchasing for Nintendo fans as a commemorative item.
