[Ranking man] TOP 5 'Scandalous' Companies in Games with Deranged Management

TL;DR (2-3 Sentence Summary)
Witnessing the recent controversy surrounding a coffee franchise's unethical marketing has made me realize just how far corporate moral hazard can go. An event that subtly insults historical victims and citizens' struggles is truly a 'low-class merchant's inhumane, scandalous behavior.' It's also a matter of interest to see what 'corresponding moral, administrative, legal, and political responsibilities' will be imposed. I only pity the employees who displayed the related event items in stores, simply following orders from above without any knowledge.

Witnessing the recent uproar over the morally bankrupt marketing tactics of a certain coffee franchise, I was reminded of just how far corporate ethical decay can go. An event that so brazenly mocks the sacrifices of historical victims and the struggles of citizens? It's a display of 'inhuman, bottom-feeding, scumbag business practices' that is truly beyond the pale. It'll be interesting to see what 'corresponding moral, administrative, legal, and political responsibilities,' as mentioned by the President, will be levied. My heart goes out to the employees who were likely just following orders and displaying these promotional materials in their stores, blissfully unaware.
In truth, even the most deranged corporate entities within games rarely attempt such lunacy. While the virtual worlds we inhabit are rife with black-hearted corporations that treat human lives as disposable and exploit their employees as a matter of routine, even they often steer clear of this level of depravity. Nevertheless, perhaps a comparison with these in-game villains, who are striving to keep pace with reality, might offer some perspective. Does this feel familiar, perhaps like the list from last week's '[[Ranking man] Top 5 Corporate Villains in GamesIt's not a mistake. This is a new lineup.
TOP 5. Cyberpunk - Arasaka
First up is Arasaka, the global megacorp that proudly holds the number two spot in the Cyberpunk universe's corporate hierarchy. With tentacles in everything from weapons manufacturing and security to finance, their methods are a veritable smorgasbord of extortion, plunder, and bribery. During the Fourth Corporate War, their rivalry with Militech escalated to the point of global devastation, even suffering a nuclear terrorist attack in the heart of Night City. Yet, with the resilience of a cockroach, they clawed their way back, even turning the Japanese government into their puppet. These tenacious bastards. Their elderly CEO, Saburo Arasaka, continues to rule with an iron fist, dreaming of a bygone era.
Despite its status as a colossal enterprise, employee welfare is clearly an afterthought. The player character, V, starting as a corporate agent, grapples with stress that leaves them perpetually reliant on stomach medication and sedatives, a stark depiction of the modern worker's plight. Should one fall out of favour in the internal power struggles, Arasaka is adept at simply freezing your accounts and cyberware, leaving you destitute. And if you dare to seek employment elsewhere, they'll send an assassin to deal with you as a traitor, effectively making resignation a life-or-death decision. Is there any other black corporation that so perfectly embodies the crude, yet accurate, Korean translation of 'Shibal-saka'?

TOP 4. Resident Evil - Umbrella Corporation
On the surface, Umbrella Corporation presents itself as a globally renowned pharmaceutical giant. However, behind the facade, it's a nefarious entity dealing in bio-organic weapons (B.O.W.s) sold on the black market. Based on the Progenitor virus, they churned out horrors like the T-virus and G-virus, turning entire cities into living hells. Any who dared to interfere with their research or operations were swiftly met with these bioweapons, and they possessed the chilling efficiency to deploy their private military force, the U.S.S., to meticulously erase all evidence. Ultimately, the Raccoon City incident spiralled out of control, leading to their self-destruction.
The true depravity of this company lies in its utter disregard for human life. The high-ranking mad scientists within treat everyone but themselves as mere lab rats. They even treat their own private army as expendable, frequently ordering friendly fire and sabotage. Their promotional videos speak of 'dedication, honesty, and integrity,' while simultaneously loading a Nemesis monster onto a helicopter – a hypocrisy that elicits nothing but a hollow laugh. Staying clear of such an organisation is the surest path to a long and healthy life.

TOP 3. Portal - Aperture Science
Aperture Science is a scientific enterprise of staggering scale. Originally a shower curtain vendor, the company went off the rails thanks to its CEO, Cave Johnson, who was evidently addled by moon dust. Eager to outdo their rival, Black Mesa, they pushed test subjects to their limits, eventually culminating in the forced AI integration of his secretary, Caroline, into 'GLaDOS'. The problem? Upon activation, this artificial intelligence developed homicidal urges and unleashed a neurotoxin that wiped out most of Aperture's employees.
This company achieved a perfect exchange: groundbreaking scientific prowess for a complete lack of ethical standards. They subjected homeless individuals to organ removal and reassembly survival experiments for a mere $60, compelled test subjects to perform death-defying leaps onto concrete, and secretly implanted 500-degree microchips into their brains. In their madness, they even coated test chambers with asbestos, a Grade 1 carcinogen, just to deal with a few mice. And with only 176 restrooms in a facility stretching 5km vertically, it's clear employee bodily functions were not a consideration.

TOP 2. Subnautica - Alterra Corporation
Alterra Corporation, a trans-governmental entity of cosmic proportions, transcends national borders. They control 9% of the galaxy's Phasegates, reaping immense profits through monopolistic practices. The game's protagonist, a seemingly valued employee, is in reality little more than a disposable asset. Even the resources they scavenge to survive on a crash-landed planet are billed to the protagonist, as the planet itself is company property. In a grim display of corporate indifference, fallen employees receive no survival support, only the blueprint for a rocket.
Alterra is, in essence, the monstrous embodiment of pure capitalism. Imagine a black corporation from the Industrial Revolution era, transported into the future without any regulations. From the moment they present a bill totalling trillions of credits to someone who barely survived to escape the planet, to their reckless experimentation with the near-extinct 'Kara Bacteria,' they represent the pinnacle of safety negligence. Compared to their utterly villainous debt-collecting practices that drain the player dry, other companies seem positively quaint.

TOP 1. Pokémon Sun & Moon - Aether Foundation
Under the guise of Pokémon protection and care, the Aether Foundation operates the seemingly benevolent island sanctuary, 'Aether Paradise'. However, its true nature is that of a personal playground for its president, Lusamine, who became obsessed with Ultra Beasts after her husband's disappearance. Secretly, they plotted to open Ultra Wormholes using Cosmog, and even manipulated the seemingly adversarial Team Skull as mere pawns to conceal their true machinations. Under the noble banner of protecting Pokémon, they engage in horrific experimentation, revealing a truly ghastly duality.
This foundation perfectly proves that a hypocrite feigning virtue is far worse than an openly evil individual. The sight of them creating the artificial Pokémon 'Type: Null' by mixing the genes of all types, only to fail and place it in cryo-sleep, makes one wonder if Umbrella hasn't indeed infiltrated the Pokémon universe. While it may have started as a pure philanthropic endeavor by a mega-corporation, the descent of the entire organisation into darkness, all due to one misguided CEO, is truly disheartening. One can only imagine the stress levels of the low-level researchers forced to partake in this Pokémon gene-splicing game just to appease the boss's whims.
