Amazon Games' New World: Aeternum, which once boasted a staggering peak of 910,000 concurrent players at launch, is finally calling it a day after roughly five years of service. With the announcement, all sales have been promptly pulled.

When New World first launched in September 2021, it was an absolute magnet for global players. However, the initial hype was short-lived; it bled users rapidly, dropping to the 100,000 mark within just three months. Even with a fresh server launch in 2022 and a major console expansion rebranded as 'Aeternum' in 2024, it struggled to break 60,000 concurrent players, a far cry from its initial debut.

The writing was on the wall by October 2025, when the studio announced that Season 10 'Night-haven' would be the final content update. While the official line kept things vague, many suspect this was a casualty of Amazon's broader corporate restructuring. Following the news, the Steam concurrent player count, which had been holding at around 50,000, plummeted to a dismal 1,200 by January 2026.

Despite pivoting to include 10-player raids, solo trials, and necessary quality-of-life tweaks like swimming, the game couldn't shake its reputation. Players were vocal about the repetitive, tedious quest design, persistent technical bugs, and a noticeable lack of depth in its end-game content.

As of January 16, the game sits at a 'Mixed' rating on Steam (253,463 reviews, 67% positive). However, the last 30 days tell a grimmer tale, with recent reviews sliding into 'Mostly Negative' territory (359 reviews, 28% positive). Paid currency sales will cease on July 20, 2026, with the servers entering a 'maintenance-only' mode—no new content, no server merges—until the final shutdown on January 31, 2027.

Elsewhere on the Steam global charts, the English release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak snatched second place on the 15th. Meanwhile, Resident Evil: Requiem climbed to sixth following a gameplay reveal at the Resident Evil Showcase on the 16th.

In the daily peak concurrent players top 20, Limbus Company hit 122,193 players, securing 11th place after updating its Main Story Chapter 9 Part 2—nearly touching its all-time high of 124,754. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree followed closely in 16th place with 85,148 players, buoyed by a fresh patch fixing bugs and balancing gameplay.
